Erich was the youngest of 3 children. Shortly after his birth his parents discovered that he was deaf. His father, a biotechnologist, immediately started trying to find a way to let his little boy to not only hear, but to hear better than any other human. After 15 years of effort, he finally came up with the Leitner Enhanced Aural Device, or LEAD. As soon as it was approved for human use, a pair was implanted in his son, opening a whole new world of sense to the boy.
Erich reveled in his new-found sense of hearing. The world was full of new sounds just waiting to be discovered. It was full of new languages to learn. He started by simultaneously learning his family's native German and Federation Standard. His efforts were greatly aided by the subtle nuance he was able to detect in voices thanks to his father's tireless work. He also threw himself into music, in both singing and piano.
In his 15 early years of silence, he found freedom from his malady by flying. His oldest sister, Ilsa, would help him build various flying machines, and then he would try them out. He loved both the flying and the time spent with his sister. When she left home to join starfleet, he was devistated, but vowed that he would follow her as soon as he could. As soon as he could turned out to be when he was 18.
Upon entry to the academy, Erich decided to go the engineering route as his sister had done. The only thing he had enjoyed in his early years more than flying was building the tools for flight. Still, he wanted to fly, so he took heavy loads to ensure that he could do both, and qualified to fly all manner of small craft, and even starships.
Erich was assigned to the Relentless when it was pulled off of the Borg Task Force and reassigned to security patrols of Federation space. He got along with most of the crew, but wasn't particularly close to any of them. Most of his off time was spent learning new languages or simply sitting in the lounge listening to all the conversations around him. Even after all this time, sound was something precious to him. While on duty he mainly worked as an engineer, though occasionally he would get to fly shuttles or even fill in at the helm of the Relentless itself. Eventually he decided it was time to move on. He began looking to transfer to another vessel and was surprised when he was offered a promotion to move to the Cambrian. Needless to say, he jumped at the opportunity.
After some time with the USS Cambrian (NCC-74986-A), it was decided that she had outlived her usefulness, and his home was decommissioned. In his time aboard, he had been promoted to full Lieutenant, and been awarded the Act of Distinction. With the decommission of the Cambrian, he accepted a transfer to the USS Hyperion (NX-7438), a new experimental vessel with a long and historied name.

Attended a school for the deaf until the age of 15, at which point he transferred to standard public edgucation for 3 more years.
Erich is in excellent physical condition. No allergies or diseases were detected. The only abnormality in his body is with his hearing. He has no natural ability to hear, but instead has LEAD implants. These implants appear to bring his level of hearing much higher than that normally associated with humans. His hearing may even be better than that of any known species that does not have a natural sonar. More specific testing would be required to verify this.
Erich seems to have a deep rooted fear of silence. It seems to stem from a malfunction in his implants shortly after he received them, causing him to lose his newfound hearing. The malfunction was located and corrected within a week, but the psychological damage had already been done.
