The Medical Department is charged with the health and well-being of the entire population of the vessel or facility - both civilian and Starfleet.

Chief Medical Officer (CMO)
The Chief Medical Officer is responsible for the physical health of everyone on the vessel/facility. His/her main function is to ensure that they do not get sick or injured to begin with, and to this end monitors their health and conditioning with regular crew check ups. If necessary, the Chief Medical Officer can remove anyone from duty, even a commanding officer, and can call for a medical quarantine of any area. He/she may provide medical advice to any individual who requests it. The CMO is also responsible for all medical wards, Medical labs, Surgical suites, and other facilities. As department head he/she is responsible for approving duty rosters, and oversees all Medical experiments. The CMO reports to the XO.
Assistant Chief Medical Officer (ACMO)
Because the Chief Medical Officer cannot be expect to do all the work required. The Asst. Chief Medical Officer is charged to assist the CMO in all areas from administration, application of medical care, creating duty rosters, and acting as liaison with other departments as needed. The Asst. CMO reports to the CMO.
Medical Officer (MED)
Also simply called "Doctors", Medical Officers undertake the majority of the work from examining the crew, administering medical care to Civilians, and operation of base clinics not directly overseen by the Chief Medical Officer. All Medical Officers report to the Asst. CMO.
Medical Resident (MEDRES)
Medical Residents are Doctors completing their Residency, the last step before becoming a full licensed doctors. A residency normally lasts two to three years depending on specialization. In Starfleet Residents typically hold the rank of Ensign, and are promoted to Lieutenant JG after completion of their residency and become Medical Officers. Residents are assigned to a Medical Officer who is there attending.
Chief Surgeon (CSURG)
The Chief Surgeon oversees all Surgical procedures. He/she creates duty rosters for surgeons under him/her, and oversees training of all Surgeons in new techniques. Must be on call at all times for emergencies. In many cases the Chief Surgeon is also the CMO, ACMO or regular Medical Officer. The Chief Surgeon reports to the CMO.
All Surgeons may assist the Chief Surgeon in Surgical procedures, and may perform other operations when directed by the Chief Surgeon. Must be on call at all times for emergencies. All Surgeons report to the Chief Surgeon.
Head Nurse (M-HNS)
The Head Nurse oversees all Nurses on the vessel/facility. He/she ensures that they are assigned to tasks and are working as required in their area. The Head Nurse may perform the duties of any normal nurse, but most often assists the Medical Officer on duty in the main sickbay. The Head Nurse maintains duty rosters for all nursing staff, oversees care of patients in medical wards, and controls access to medical supplies. The Head Nurse reports to the Asst. CMO.
Nurses are trained in basic medical care, and are capable of dealing with less serious medical cases. In more serious matters the nurse assist the medical officer in the examination and administration of medical care. This may be administration of required drugs, using instruments to heal wounds, or simply assuring the injured party that they will be ok. The Nurses also maintain the medical wards, overseeing the patients and ensuring they are receiving medication and care as instructed by the Medical Officer. All Nurses report to the Medical Officer on duty and to the Head Nurse.
The EMH was developed to act as a Medical Officer when required, and can also be activated to provide replacement or assistance to the real Chief Medical Officer or Asst. CMO. The EMH is programmed with all current medical knowledge and has the ability to learn as required. Additionally the EMH can take on any other medical role as required by the Medical Officer. The EMH reports to any officer present.
The Counselor is considered part of Starfleet Medical because of their training in psychology. The Counselor is responsible for advising the CO when dealing with other people and/or races, and in helping crew members with personal, psychological, and emotional problems. Often works in cooperation with the Diplomatic Corps when dealing with other races or cultures. The reports to the CMO and XO.
Physician's Mate (PM)
The Physician's Mate trains and supervises Medical crewmen in departmental operations, repairs, and protocols; maintains duty assignments for all Medical personnel; leads triage and emergency medical efforts when necessary; co-ordinates all personnel cross-trained in emergency medical operations; and is qualified to temporarily act as Chief Medical Officer (except where surgical procedures must be performed) if so ordered. The Physician's Mate reports to the Chief Medical Officer.
Medical Crewmen (M-CM)
Medical Crewmen often are called Orderlies, Nurse's Assistants, and Medics. Each has specialized duties as outlined below.
Medical Crewmen - Orderlies (M-CMOD)
Orderlies are assigned to medical wards, Sickbays, and Surgical Suites as needed to clean the facility, re-stock supplies, and assist in patient transportation if necessary. Orderlies report to the Duty Officer, and to the Physician's Mate.
Medical Crewmen - Nurse's Assistants (M-CMNA)
Nurse's Assistants are assigned to all Medical Areas to assist all Nurses in their duties. They MAY NOT administer any medications or do any medical procedures other than checking patient vital signs. Nurse's Assistants report to their assigned Nurse, and to the Physician's Mate.
Medical Crewmen - Medics (M-EMT)
Medics are trained in emergency medical care, and are usually the first to arrive in any medical emergency. All Medics report to the Physician's Mate and to any Medical Duty Officer.
