Lieutenant Commander Owen Grey, PhD is the Head Counselor aboard Starbase 425.
BACKGROUND
Pre Starfleet
Owen was born in Perth, Western Australia. His mother, Aleea Grey, died in child birth, and he never knew his father. Aleea Grey was a human but when the orphanage started his file they realized he was half Betazoid. Owen grew up in several foster homes. Oddly he was never adopted but grew up relatively well adjusted. In school he was always a bright child, however, he would never apply himself to achieve the marks those around him knew he was capable. Shortly before he entered high school his empathic and telepathic abilities began to manifest. Despite only being half Betazoid he appeared to have a slightly higher degree of telepathy then normal Human / Betazoid hybrids, however it is still below the Betazoid baseline.
In High School Owen was at the centre of an investigation. He was accused by a fellow class mate of cheating on the biology final. The classmate claimed he used his 'unnatural' abilities to cheat. Eventually, he was proven innocent, the accuser eventually admitted he lied and was xenophobic. After then Owen made an effort to suppress his abilities, his marks fell even further and graduated high school with only average marks.
Starfleet Marine Corps
Unsure where to go from there Owen took the Starfleet Academy Entrance Exam, not really expecting to get in. However he passed and was accepted into the academy. Not sure what to specialize in he took General Studies for his first year. Taking a range of courses he found loved to fly, but also really like the marines as well. So in his second year he specialized as a Marine Infantry Officer. He then was accepted into the exchange program and spent his third year at the Campus on Vulcan.
His fourth year was sent on Andoria specializing in Force Recon. Owen was commissioned as Second Lieutenant in 2371, and posted as a Platoon Commander with the 4th Regiment of the 9th Marine Division. The Division was deployed near the edge of Federation space near Demilitarized Zone. The first year saw his unit deploy into the DMZ multiple to deal with the Maquis and aggressions from the Cardassians. In 2372 he was promoted to First Lieutenant and Company XO. His Company was then involved in the Federation-Klingon War, his Battalion spent most of the war on a desert planet defending a communications and intelligence outpost.
Owen began to feel the stresses of war, he also saw the way it affected his men. However, before long the Dominion War had broken out and the 9th Division was one of the few accustom to the area. So they found themselves on repeat deployments. Shortly after the outbreak of the war Grey was promoted to Captain and took over command of his Company has his old CO went on to serve as the Battalions Logistics Officer.
Captain Grey lead his Company throughout the war. His unit saw combat on many worlds. Most notably his Battalion was deployed to AR-558 shortly after the Siege involving the crew of the USS Defiant. His unit also action on Ricktor Prime and in the Tyra System. His units final deployment of the war was to Bajor, to assist if the final attack on Cardassia some how failed.
During the battle of Ricktor Prime Grey's XO a hot shot young Lieutenant who had become a close friend of Owen's during their time together was killed. The young marine had a pair of sunglasses that he always wore and had with him. Owen took the glasses as a memento of his fallen comrade and still wears them today.
At the end of the war his unit was given leave on Bajor. In the few weeks Owen saw him men collapse. The battle hardened soldiers quickly succumb to the psychological, emotional and physical stresses that such a long conflict had. Owen watched helplessly as in a matter of weeks his men crumbled, a Sergeant who had dragged Grey out the line of fire from a Battalion of Jem'Hadar when the Captain was shot, turned to alcohol, two weeks after the end of war he was hospitalized for alcohol poisoning before being arrested for the murder of a local in a bar fight.
Three days later Owen walked in a corpsman who had been attached to his company, the man had just put a phaser in his mouth and pulled the trigger. Helpless to help his mean Owen took a leave of absence. He remained on Bajor and did what he could to help his men. He found he couldn't help them enough, within a month three more had committed suicide.
Career Change
Owen thought of leaving, just quitting Starfleet and getting as far away from the memories of war as he could. Then he meet Charlotte Adrian, a young Lieutenant who studying to become a Psychologist. The two quickly became friends, Owen shared his experiences of front line combat, she spoke of her time on Betazed during the occupation. Eventually Owen looked into becoming a Psychologist, wanting to be able to help people. He applied to Starfleet Medical and returned to Earth to completed his schooling in Psychology. Graduating in 2380 with his PhD Owen turned in his twin silver bars for a pair of gold pips, and his green uniform for blue. Now a naval Lieutenant he headed to Christchurch, New Zealand to complete his residency.
A man of few hobbies Owen spends a lot of his free time in the gym, but also enjoys reading and the occasional holodeck simulation, usually 20th and early 21st century spy thrillers. He also has an appreciation and interest in firearms from the same era. He has quiet the collection of weaponry from the time and keeps them cleaned and maintained by hand. He also spends time on the holodeck practicing with them and had used several in the field during the Dominion War.
Time as a Psychologist
His first posting as a Counselor was to the Luna Class USS Europa (NCC-80104), he was happy to find he would be working on Charlotte, now a Lieutenant Commander and the ships' Head Counselor. Three years later he was promoted to Lieutenant Commander, and made Head Counselor when Charlotte was promoted to Commander and made the Europa's First Officer. During his time on the Europa he became well known for never wearing his uniform when he didn't have to, taking advantage of unwritten clause that often allowed shrinks to get away with it.
Recently he was reassigned to the USS Pegasus (NCC-53847-E) as their Head Counselor. In 2387 during a surprise first contact mission Grey had a rare chance to return to his marines root, as part of the rescue team for Captain Walsh and Ensign Cross. Later that year Grey was aboard Starbase 425 when it was seriously damaged by a suicide bomber.
In 2388 Owen took a several month leave of absence, which he was very private about. When he returned to duty he was assigned to Starbase 425, his posting on the Pegasus having already been filled.
